
How the Hackathon Works
The National Hackathon 2025 is an energising, full-day innovation sprint designed to bring diverse minds together to solve national challenges — without the need to stay overnight. Participants will work on-site for 12 hours, guided by experts and supported by resources throughout the day.
Event Structure
The Competition is open for Teams comprising of Tertiary Level students, currently enrolled in any registered University or Tertiary Institution in Mauritius
The rules for the Competition set the conditions for participation in the competition.
They are designed to ensure fairness, originality, and responsible use of AI tools by all teams.
All participants are expected to read and comply fully with these rules before submitting their work
- General
- Participants must be Students enrolled in registered Tertiary Institutions of Mauritius.
- The Team shall comprise between 3 to 5 persons with 1 member designated as Team Leader
- All communication will be done via the email and/or mobile of the Team Leader
- All team members must take part and contribute in the production of the video.
- Teams are responsible for setting rules of meetings, conducting research, dividing the work load equally, submit reports while respecting deadlines
- Participants will use their own devices (PC, Laptop, camera and sound equipment)
- Participants will attend live and online Briefing meeting(s), set by Organisers
- Register / Subscribe, and Pay if needed, for AI or Other Tools and Platforms
- Both Free or Pro or Subscribed tools are allowed; Choice of using Free or Pro will not affect the scoring or marking evaluation by Jury Members
- The final submitted video should as far as possible abide by:
- Duration – maximum of 90 seconds.
- Language: English, French, or Creole for the AI generated voice, human voice over, captions
- Video must clearly match the main theme of the Competition
- Focus of project must be relevant problem area(s) for Road Safety in Mauritius.
- Resolution: High Definition – at least 1280 × 720 pixels (720p)
- Format: Landscape (16:9 aspect ratio)
- Have a Frame rate of 30 frames per second (fps)
- Properly captioned, titled and titled with necessary credits
- Uploading online in MP4 format – via tools such as Dropbox, Google, WeTransfer
- AI Tools: Participants must use AI tools in at least FOUR of the following areas:
- Storyline or script generation
- AI-generated images or video
- AI animation or motion
- AI voice-over or language tools
- AI music or sound generation
- Non-AI tools may also be used i.e. for video editing, special effects, music tracks
- Voice-overs can be AI-generated or recorded by a person
- Originality, Integrity and Copyright:
- Your video must be your own original work
- No plagiarism is allowed. All concepts must be original as far as possible.
- AI-generated content must be prompted and selected by the team
- Do not generate harmful, offensive, pornographic or misleading content or hatred message which could incite racial animosity or disrupt national peace
- Music must be AI-generated or royalty-free with no copyright
- Work-in-Progress Portfolio of AI Video Production:
- To ensure the integrity of your entry, each team must submit a concise Portfolio documenting the creative process. The portfolio, submitted as PDF, slide deck, or as ZIP files must include, as far as possible, the 7 sections listed later.
- Shortlisting & Live Pitch
- A short-listing will be carried out by a Panel of Judges to retain the top 15 videos
- The top 15 teams will be invited to a live finale to pitch in for 5 minutes to the Jury Panel
- The pitch will give the Team an opportunity to explain their research, their main idea, how they used AI tools and the message behind the video
- Decisions of Organisers and Jury Judges
- The decision of Organisers and Jury Judges shall be final
- Use of Winning Videos
- The best videos may be used by Government for awareness campaigns
- The Ministry reserves the right to use the best videos in official public awareness campaigns, including on Social Media
- Full credit will be given to the Team and their original creation
- Prizes, Certificates
- Interesting Prizes will be awarded to Winners and Runner Ups, including:
- Prize Money for Winners:
- 1st Prize: Rs 50,000
- 2nd Prize: Rs 40,000
- 3rd Prize: Rs 30,000
- 4th Prize: Rs 20,000
- 5th Prize: Rs 10,000
- After the conclusion of the competition, the Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC) will support the creative and professional journey of the Winners and Runners-up of the AI Competition by offering free admission to MFDC Masterclasses.
- Broadcast of the 5 best videos on national TV and social media platforms
- Certificates of Participation will be awarded to all participants
